I’m back with another review! About a month ago, I decided to try out a new drugstore eyeliner, the L’Oreal Voluminous Feline Noir Liner. My favorite drugstore eyeliner is the L’Oreal Infallible Super Slim Liner, so I decided to give the Voluminous Feline a try since I’ve had so much success with the Super Slim!
To give you my verdict up front – I unfortunately do not like the Voluminous Feline nearly as much as I like the Super Slim. On my first use of the Voluminous Feline, I thought I had found my new holy grail drugstore liner because it turned out great on that first application. I liked the packaging better, the color payoff was a deep black, it was so easy to get the effortless flicked wing effect, and the felt tip of the liner was very similar (actually almost identical) to the the Super Slim, so I knew I’d be able to control it well. This picture was the first day that I tried the liner. It took me no more than 15 seconds on each eye (which is very fast for me) to get the liner just how I liked it, and I was ecstatic about it!
However, from that first use on, the liner just wasn’t the same and I have no idea why! I used it exactly the same as I had every other Super Slim liner before it, but the Voluminous Feline seemed to get worse each time I picked it up. Here is what I experienced with each subsequent use.
- Every time I used the Voluminous Feline after that first successful try, the black pigmentation became lighter on my eyelids. To have a noticeable difference in the color payoff on just the second, third and fourth uses is pretty bad if you ask me (I mean, that’s still in brand new product territory)!
- The liner seemed to “drag” over the shadow on my lids, leaving colorless gaps, therefore I had to retrace the line multiple times to get an actual black color payoff. Retracing eyeliner is very difficult to do, especially as I lost my patience, and it’s even harder to retrace the flick on the winged part! The strange thing was that I would test the liner on the back of my hand and the pigmentation was there and the line stayed consistent, but as soon as I applied it to my eye area, it became patchy again.
- It dried out much quicker than the Super Slim, which caused the previous problems to get worse with each use.
The one good thing that I can say about this product was that the liner definitely did not smudge throughout the day (I’m not sure if that had anything to do with the amount of layers I applied to get the black effect).
The following pictures were from the third time I used the Voluminous Feline. I had to retrace the line immediately above my lashes many times over, something I’ve never had to do with the Super Slim. I’m already not the greatest at getting eyeliner perfect right off the bat, so I was really unhappy about the retracing aspect. I’m not sure if you can tell from these pictures, but the black on the wing is not as deep as the rest of the liner, and that’s because I didn’t want to attempt to retrace the wing more than once, or else who knows how thick that wing would’ve turned out!
Now I know it doesn’t look terrible here, but for a couple of dollars less (based on CVS pricing at the time when I picked mine up), I could purchase the Super Slim and know that the quality of the product will be much better and will last me for a few months or more, rather than just the first couple of applications.
I may have just grabbed the bad apple of the bunch, but I think I’m going to stick to the Super Slim and will pass on repurchasing the Voluminous Feline.
